A heartfelt photographic celebration of the Sultanate of Oman, from sand to sea, and from mountain high to luxuriant lowlands, resplendent in all its diversity.
From the soaring mountains to the ragged wadis and the gentle coastal plains where the surf of the Arabian Sea crashes ashore, the Sultanate of Oman is blessed with a breathtaking allure.
Lofty peaks, impassable to even the hardiest four-by-four, tower along the Hajar Mountain range, dividing the Empty Quarter’s vast sea of shifting sands from the lush coastal lowlands that slope down to the ocean. The remote villages that nestle between these mountain spurs are home to communities whose way of life is in many ways little changed since ancient times. Larger towns on the coast, born of trading posts and fishing ports, would perhaps once have welcomed the original Sindbad with his embellished accounts of travels beyond Oman’s shores.
Jaap Croese’s lens captures so much of this and more: the people of Oman, their traditions and heritage and the way of life today. Oman, A Photographic Voyage is an invaluable companion for any visitor – armchair or literal – who would like to wander back across this beautiful Sultanate.
Jaap Croese has worked in Muscat since 1989 when he first came to Oman to work as a geophysicist. He has long been a passionate photographer and still tours the length and breadth of the land with his beloved cameras. He particularly takes an interest in people, nature and architecture.
His love of photography dates back to his early childhood when he would accompany his mother making slides from film she had shot on an analogue Minolta camera. Since then, he has used many different cameras and currently uses a Nikon Z8 mirrorless alongside a lighter Fujifilm digital mirrorless X-T2 camera. Jaap gives occasional workshops about photography techniques and how to use software to enhance digital images.
