There is a special place where the fringes of the desert come into contact with the more fertile coastal areas. "Nomas" in Arabic described for ancient herdsmen the shorter grass that grows in this space. It is a space where two separate cultures abut, one to the other. This space - literally "fringe" in English - is a zone only the Nomad traverses, and indeed is arguably the ancient root of the word 'nomad' itself. Such nomads, fluent in manners, language and customs of these two worlds, celebrate the joys of two contrasting ways of life and on each traverse, play their small but crucial role in bringing the cultures together.
Nomad Publishing brings together a range of innovative international travel and history books along with the a range that historically has tended more to academic works with a Middle East focus.
Max Scott, founder of Nomad Publishing and of Gilgamesh Publishing, studied Arabic and Middle East Studies at Edinburgh University and went on to work at US publishing houses McGraw-Hill and Prentice Hall, encompassing parts of US Macmillan and a range of academic and professional publishers. From there he moved into independent publishing to run Stacey International publishers, building a list of books related largely to the Arab World. Max launched Gilgamesh Publishing in March 2011, expanding rapidly and managing a small team who look after the core editorial, design, sales and publicity roles.
