About the Authors Pat Lancaster began her career in journalism on a weekly newspaper in her Lancashire hometown. She moved to London in the 1970s, working with the Saudi Press Agency and later became deputy editor of The Middle East magazine. She has contributed to a range of national newspapers in the UK and the Gulf and broadcasts regularly on television and radio on Middle East-related issues She is the author of three books, one of which has been made into a television feature film.
Sir William Patey KCMG joined the Diplomatic Service in 1975 with postings in Abu Dhabi Libya and Australia before being appointed Deputy Head of United Nations Department. From there he moved to Riyadh as Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General (1995 -1998). Following a posting as Ambassador in Sudan (2002) he was appointed Ambassador to Iraq and then returned to Saudi Arabia in 2007, this time as Ambassador. He went on to serve as Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2010-2012. Among various positions he has held since retirement, he is a Trustee of the Turquoise Mountain Trust.
