"An Entirely New Conception" - Britain and the Commonwealth in the 21st Century 2/e David Howell with a foreword by William Hague "In many aspects of our lives, whether in sport, the environment, business or culture, the Commonwealth connection remains vivid and enriching... It is, in lots of ways, the face of the future." "As a minister, campaigner and parliamentarian, David Howell has for the last two decades been the foremost advocate of the renewal and reinvigoration of the Commonwealth. With persistence and foresight he has consistently argued that Britain can only gain from making more of its myriad personal, commercial, linguistic and cultural links with fully a quarter of all the nations on earth. ...This book can help all concerned think about what to make of this extraordinary organisation in the future. It contains a vision and a plan wholly oriented to the future – one which leaders and policy makers might disagree with but they should most definitely not ignore." This updated retrospective on the evolving nature of the Commonwealth leads into an outline of its unique opportunities today updated now with reference to China's increasing international role.
As British headlines daily question Britain’s role in the new world order, Lord Howell of Guildford presents a timely retrospective of collected essays that present an overarching view of the role of the Commonwealth in modern global history. These farsighted essays, many featured in the mainstream media over the years, are edited here with fresh insights that present a well informed proposal for a reinvigorated Commonwealth and a new paradigm in the way Britain sees its global position for the future. |
